An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Groom to join a small and friendly team on a stunning private mini-estate nestled in the countryside. This full-time, live-in role (5.5 days per week) offers variety, responsibility, and the chance to work with beautifully kept heavy horses in a well-run and gorgeous private estate.

We’re looking for someone easy-going, reliable and highly experienced—a natural leader with a genuine love of horses and country life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promoting and showcasing the Suffolk Punch
  • Plaiting, trimming, and grooming to an exceptional standard for shows and turnout
  • Handling of youngstock and foals with care and confidence
  • Preparing the lorry and horses for travel (bandaging etc)
  • Transporting horses to and from stud (HGV licence essential)
  • Day-to-day yard duties including mucking out, poo picking, and tack cleaning
  • General care of small number of sheep and alpacas
  • Supporting the estate’s breeding programme
  • Leading up at shows, from country level to local
  • Observing and reporting any signs of illness or injury
  • Liaising with the vet, farrier, dentist, feed merchant, and other suppliers
  • Basic admin- entering shows online
  • Maintaining stock levels of feed, hay, bedding and supplements
  • Working both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and following instructions when needed
  • Overseeing the estate, yard, paddocks and supporting a small, established team

The Ideal Candidate:

  • MUST be a confident and capable horseperson with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Organised, motivated, and a natural team leader
  • Takes genuine pride in their work, maintaining consistently high standards in all aspects of horse and yard care
  • Able to turn horses out to a high standard – including plaiting, trimming, and general presentation
  • Holds a valid HGV licence (essential)
  • Trustworthy, approachable, and professional
  • Has excellent, checkable references
  • Happy working with all ages of horses, including foals and youngstock
  • Comfortable with sole charge responsibilities when required
  • Flexible and proactive in day-to-day tasks
  • Open minded, willing with good common sense
  • MUST be confident working with large breeds – this is paramount
